On Wednesday, October 30th, Los Angeles City approved another tenant welfare law – the Emergency Renters Relief Program. This program is intended to aid eligible tenants facing rent increases over 8% with up to three months of rent assistance.
There are some eligibility requirements, such as:
- Tenants and families must earn 80% of median income or less for a family of four
- Be current tenants – no eviction judgments for non-payment of rent
- Received rent increases on or after March 15, 2019 over 8%
This program approved approximately $3 million from funds budgeted to assist tenants. It is intended to “bridge the gap” at the end of the year between supposedly high rent increases that will eventually get rolled back to the March 15, 2019 rate plus AB 1482 allowable 7.9% rent increase. Tenants have until December 31, 2019 to apply.
